We have two area softball teams still alive in the state playoffs. Both programs already have made school history.

Calallen advanced by beating Flour Bluff, 5-4, last night to complete a two-game sweep. That triumph punched their ticket to the state softball tournament for the first time in school history..

It has been a record-breaking season for the Lady Cats.

And this afternoon, they were back at it. Practicing in preparation of Friday’s state semifinals in Austin.

They do not know who they will play at state. But finally getting there is a dream come true for them.

“I could not really sleep last night,” Calallen second baseman Aviana Gonzalez said. “It was just exciting to see all of our hard work paying off and we are finally doing what our dreams were.”

Left fielder Raegan Tennill similarly is excited about what is still in store for her team.

“You know, I still think it’s a dream, so exciting and it’s really awesome to be part of this team,” Tennill said. “It’s going to be really tough at state and very nerve-racking but we just have to push our nerves aside and focus on what we do best and do good.”

We should know by 10 p.m. tonight who Calallen will play in Friday’s semifinals. The game will be at either 9 a.m. or noon.
