A Kolda Elementary School teacher is using visual aids to transform her classroom and teach her students.

Amalia Barragan teaches fourth grade and for the past 14 years, she’s decked out her classroom.

Today’s theme is the board game “Candy Land.”

Barragan says it takes her about a month to come up with a lesson plan to match the theme.

She uses her own money and hours of her free time to decorate.

But Barragan says all that doesn’t matter as long as her students learn.

“You wouldn’t want to sit in here and do worksheets all day that’s pretty boring,” says Isabella Juarez, a fourth-grade student at Kolda. “You’d rather do a whole bunch of fun stuff with like these beautiful room transformations which I absolutely love. They’re so much fun.”

Today’s Candy Land theme is to help students review for the STAAR test.

And coming up later on KRIS 6 News, find out where this teacher came up with her unique teaching style.
