We’ve all heard the stories over the years that sugar and fat are among the worst foods imaginable to ingest.

It would appear to make sense that rich foods like creamy buttery-tasting avocados or butter-drenched salmon would contribute to weight gain. It would also seem like carb-heavy bagels and sugary treats like Captain Crunch Cereal aren’t good for you, either.

But doctors are examining what happens inside our bodies when we regularly indulge in copious amounts of fat and sugar on their own.

And guess what?

Business Insider reports scientists are finding that fat doesn’t necessarily lead to weight gain. But dozens of studies continue to indicate too much sugar is bad for you.

Aaron Carroll, a professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, describes the relationship between eating fat and weight gain this way in his book, “The Bad Food Bible: How and Why to Eat Sinfully.”

“There is one thing we know about fats,” Carroll wrote. “Fat consumption does not cause weight gain. To the contrary, it might actually help us shed a few pounds.”

So don’t hesitate to stock up on avocados, salmon and nuts.

But those granola bars, breakfast cereal and white rice might be another story.
