A 43-year-old Corpus Christi man has been sentenced to 75 years in prison Tuesday after he was convicted on four charges in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed one King High School student last year and seriously injured another one.
Elton Holmes was sentenced to 75 years for being involved in an accident involving death, 55 years for serious bodily injury, 50 years for aggravated assault and 20 years for criminally negligent homicide.
All sentences will run concurrently.
Holmes’ faced up to 99 years or life in prison.
Holmes was convicted Friday of four charges in connection with a hit-and-run accident with two teenagers as they crossed a street near King High School last year.
Holmes was convicted of causing an accident involving death, causing an accident involving bodily injury and aggravated assault. Holmes was not guilty on manslaughter charges but was found guilty on a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide.
The charges stemmed from an incident where Holmes was convicted of hitting 15-year-old Madicyn Knott and 16-year-old Rai-Ane Garza in a crosswalk near their school. Knott survived, but Garza was killed in the March 27 accident.
The two girls were at King for a Color Guard meeting, hoping to try out for the squad.
Twelve jurors and two alternates — made up of nine women and five men — deliberated for about 3 hours Tuesday before deciding Holmes’ fate, starting mid-morning and breaking for lunch. They deliberated about 3½ hours last week on his guilt.
