After eight years of service with the Corpus Christi Police Department, a special officer is leaving the force.

Indy, the department’s K-9 officer, officially is retiring.

A ceremony was held for him today along the bayfront.

During his time with CCPD, Indy was a patrol dog who was trained in multiple areas including drug detection, building searches, and handler protection.

Now that Indy’s retired, he will go home with one of his former handlers.

“He’s been out of state with me. He’s been on boats. He’s been on helicopters,” Senior Corpus Christi Officer Jason Lavastida said. “Obviously, we’ve been in vehicles. We’ve gone camping. He just goes where I go.”

These partners soon will enjoy retirement together.

Lavastida is set to retire from the department next month.
