Fort Bend Marshall senior football player Drew Conley was shot and killed Monday night.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Conley allegedly was shot by his uncle during an argument at their southwest Houston home, police said.

Conley’s team, the 14-0 Fort Bend Marshall Buffaloes, will meet 13-1 Calallen in the semifinals of the Class 5A – Division II playoffs Friday night at Farris Stadium in San Antonio.

The Chronicle reports the shooting apparently occurred around 11:45 p.m. Monday in the 6900 block of River Bluff. The uncle and 17-year-old nephew were fighting, when the uncle grabbed a rifle and shot the boy in the upper leg, police said.

A family member took him to the hospital, where he died.

Conley, a senior at Marshall, played safety for the football team.

Marshall football head coach James Williams declined to go into detail concerning Conley’s death but told the Chronicle, “It’s a pretty big blow to this team,” and that Conley “was a great kid and made a huge impact on this campus.”

Police took the uncle into custody, said Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department. It’s unclear what charges will be filed.

Officers recovered a weapon at the scene.
