The Dallas Cowboys’ offense might be sputtering this season.
Many pundits are blaming the Cowboys’ offensive struggles on the lack of a game-breaking wide receiver. The controversial dismissal of Dez Bryant earlier this year and Jason Witten’s retirement are only intensifying that contention.
On Tuesday, Dallas owner Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM, the Cowboys’ flagship radio network station, that the team has not had a true No. 1 receiver in “several years.“
Dallas added Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson in free agency and drafted Michael Gallup in the third round after letting Bryant go.
Those receivers have combined for 25 catches for 268 yards and one touchdown. The 2-3 Cowboys produced one offensive touchdown in their 19-16 loss at Houston Sunday night.
“We still have guys (that) in their way who can make the plays for us and we’ll continue to work the passing game,” Jones said. “Obviously we need to get better in the passing game.”
Facts speak otherwise — even as the Cowboys are only a half-game out of first place in the middling NFC East.
The Cowboys currently rank 29th among the 32 NFL teams in passing yards (86) and 30th in net yards per attempt (5.4) and yards per game (172 ypg.)
It won’t get any easier for them, either. The Cowboys will be facing one of the best defenses in the league on Sunday. Jacksonville ranks second in the league, allowing opposing teams 5.4 yards per pass attempt.
