CORPUS CHRISTI – Nearly 400 sailors from more than 60 countries around the world are competing in the Youth Sailing World Championships right here in Corpus Christi.

With that scope of global impact, the Art Center of Corpus Christi is partnering with YSWC to educate the public about environmentally conscious behavior and activities.

Volunteers painted a temporary black canvas greater than the length of a football field on the retention wall behind the Emerald Beach Hotel. Sailors and visitors are encouraged to leave their mark with eco-friendly chalk.

“The Youth Sailing World Championships decided to be a leader and adopt a theme of sustainability and ocean conservation, and the Art Center is trying to help them reach that platinum level of clean regattas by being that source of information and inspiration,” Dianna Bluntzer said.

The Art Center and Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi are hosting several educational conservation seminars for sailors all week.

These educational efforts are bringing worldwide attention to the Coastal Bend.

“I’m so proud to be from Corpus Christi, and we’re getting huge exposure around the world for something so tremendously positive,” Bluntzer said.
