The head of the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women was in Rockport today to meet with leaders from area shelters.
Katherine Sullivan, the office’s acting director, was at the Aransas County Courthouse to learn more about how area shelters worked through the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and how the storm impacted day-to-day operations.
Many area shelters had to evacuate their clients as Harvey made its way toward the Texas coast.
“One of the most helpful things I heard in there is the importance of using social media, using multiple ways to communicate with the victims,” Sullivan said. “I thought that was an excellent suggestion, because once people are looking for those services or houses they need that information. So how do we communicate effectively?”
Sullivan is also planning to visit shelters in Beaumont and Houston.
