It’s about that time; your kids are about to finish the school year and they want to work. Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend has a program to help them reach their goals.

Both Ke’Aundrea Sanders and Racheal Requenez are 16, best friends and looking for work. Like most teenagers, they spent their time on schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Now they’re having a hard time getting a job because they don’t have experience, but they can’t gain that experience until they get a job.

"I’ve been looking for a job since I turned 16 in October," said Sanders.

"It’s a disadvantage when you don’t have experience," explained Requenez.

But, their luck may change.

"We partner employers with students or young adults that are looking for summer work. The best part of this, is that it’s a paid work internship," said Monika De La Garza, Public Relations Manager for Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend.

Workforce Solutions helps locals find work. It has a program called Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU); that program helps people with a high school diploma, or those who either dropped out of high school or have a GED, find work.

The YOU program is also helping teenagers get jobs this summer. De La Garza said dozens of companies in our area are looking for hundreds of workers.

You can start by registering with: https://wit.twc.state.tx.us/WORKINTEXAS/wtx?pageid=APP_HOME&cookiecheckflag=1

Then, go to a Workforce Solutions career center. The information is listed, here: https://www.workforcesolutionscb.org/career-centers/

Sanders and Requenez plan to do both things to get jobs this summer.

"I like to be independent…depending on my parents a lot, it gets old," stated Sanders.

There is also a program to help students with disabilities find work. It’s called the You Earn & Learn Program; contact Workforce Solutions at 888-860-JOBS for more information.
