Cunningham and South Park Middle Schools are being consolidated into one school.

The construction site, next to South Park Middle School on McArdle near Kostoryz, is taking shape and the framework of classrooms can be seen from the road.

Both South Park and Cunningham are more than 50 years old, and taxpayers voted to merge the two schools in 2016.

The new construction allows for technology and safety features that would have been too expensive in the old schools, like wiring the campus for Wi-Fi and installing a secure entrance and exit.

Much of the work has been done underground, such as wiring, plumbing and foundation.

“The foundation is a huge part, they have piers that go anywhere from 15 to 20 feet into the ground,” Project Manager John Diabala said.

Construction started last October, and CCISD says Cunningham Middle School at South Park will be ready for 1,200 students next fall.

“You can drive down SPID, and you can see this building from here,” Diabala said. “It’s just going to continue to grow and get bigger from here on out.”

Over at Windsor Park Elementary, construction is ahead of schedule.

The school will also be equipped with state-of-the-art computers and other technology upgrades for the students.

Work on Baker Middle School is a bit behind schedule, but district officials say crews are working every other Saturday and should be back on schedule soon.

Baker is also scheduled to open its doors in August 2019, and will have Wi-Fi and a secured entrance and exit.
