More than 550 athletes from across South Texas are preparing for a big weekend.

They’ll be taking part in the 35th annual Special Olympics Spring Games.

On Monday morning, organizers held a news conference to lay out all the details. Organizers announced athletes from Mathis Independent School District are joining this year’s competition. There will be 25 teams with athletes who range in age from eight to 73 years old.

Robert Katocs is one of several athletes taking part. He has been training all year and is inviting the public to come out and cheer the athletes on. "Watch us compete. You’ll have a good time." Katocs promised.

The Special Olympics Spring Games will be held Saturday at the Flour Bluff High School Football Stadium on the corner of Waldron Road and Purdue Road.
Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. and the competition begins at 10 a.m.

Citgo will sponsor this weekend’s event.
