6 Investigates: Meet the charter school whose enrollment is catching CCISD’s attention

It takes about $330 million to educate CCISD’s 38,000 students, based on the latest figures from the district’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

And, every dollar – and pupil – counts.

That’s because the complex math behind the state’s funding formulas tie billions of dollars to enrollment and average daily attendance.

As a result, when kids begin to leave the district in favor of charter schools – which also receive state funding based on enrollment and daily attendance – the money goes with them.

So, when a district leader informed CCISD school board members that a specific charter school’s enrollment increase (K through 5th grade) is beginning to factor in to projected enrollment decreases at CCISD, it raised questions about how state funding models pit charter schools against districts. And, it is forcing difficult conversations among public education leaders around the state.
