FACT CHECK: Does “Finders-Keepers” apply to Harvey storm debris?

Hurricane Harvey tore open homes and stores throughout the Coastal Bend.

And it seems folks are taking advantage of it.

A KRIS-6 news crew watched a woman walk into what was once Spanky’s Liquor Store in Port Aransas, fill a blue bucket with champagne bottles and exclaim, "It’s $99 a bottle!"

So, "fact or fiction?"  Did she have the right to take that champagne?

FICTION.

Police say it’s always wrong to take something that doesn’t belong to you. But, whether the item will have to be returned, depends on an its value and traceability.

A bottle of champagne? Hard to trace.

Someone’s boat? The owner is probably looking for it.

Police tell us it’s real simple: If it isn’t yours, don’t take it.
