CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — In a few months, Nueces County will be conducting its 2020 census. The results have a huge effect on the economy, but how important is an accurate census count?

The non-profit organization Nueces Together Complete Count Committee (NTCCC) was formed in May to help account for every person in Nueces County. It said having an accurate number is important to not only our economy, but our community.

"Every single person in Nueces County represents $1,700 dollars to our community," said Nueces Together CCC President Margaret Dechant. "And all those dollars will go back into Nueces county for services to help people all across the county at all different levels."

Nueces Together Complete Count Committee will hold its first meeting 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center located at 2021 Agnes St. to get the word out about the 2020 census' importance. The meeting is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.

The purpose of this meeting is to gather strategic ideas on how to account for every single person in the county. The non-profit says accounting for college students, military, and the homeless population is extremely difficult.

"We want them to come with some ideas on how we can reach different groups across Nueces county," Dechant said. "Such as maybe the homeless; those might be more of a challenge for us to reach out to those and get them all counted."

Paxson said benefits of the census count will go toward improving the city services.

"Each person that is counted on that, the county receives benefits that go back into infrastructure, education, and services for everyone in this county," said Nueces Together CCC Board Member Kaylynn Paxson.

Paxson said that if you lay your head down in Nueces county come April 1, then you should be included in the 2020 Census.
