CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Grab those masks and have them ready before you head out the door, because a mandatory face mask order will go into effect Friday.

Nueces Co. Judge Barbara Canales is issuing the order because of a recent surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the county.

The order will require employees and customers at big-box stores, such as grocery stores and other retailers, to wear masks.

Businesses will also be required to create a "health-and-safety-practice plan," and post it somewhere visible for customers to see.

Those who use public transportation or ride-sharing services such as Uber, Lyft or taxis will also have to wear masks.

A violation of the order could lead to a $1,000 fine. The order will run through July 10.
