Local Survival Skills class teaches knife basics, fire starting, and wild edibles

A local survivor skills enthusiast wants to share his knowledge with the community.

Tevin Gray has been obsessed with nature from a very young age. Growing up, he would build shelters in the woods and has fond memories of sharing stories around a self-made fire pit in his front yard. He developed his roots in survival skills by reading books and watching shows about the topic.

"As I grew older my interest continued to grow. After reading books like 'Hatchet' and watching 'Survivorman' on TV, my passion truly developed in teen years," he said.

Last year, Gray had the pleasure of honing his skills by teaching at an educational school in Oregon called Trackers Earth and worked this past summer for Youth Odyssey.

"I gained professional skills there, as well as teaching the youth as young as 5 years old and up to adults, primitive skills that have been lost in time," Gray said. "I Mainly valued my teachings from others with many many years of experience."

The class he is teaching will teach the basics of knives, how to start a fire, and what is edible in the wild.

"We all come from a place where these skills kept us alive," Gray told us. "Primitive fire making, cooking off the land, making tools from nature and much more. We often forget about our roots and why it important to learn these past skills. The term 'rewilding' is a hot topic now since it allows people to reconnect themselves to nature. I find be extremely valuable in today's society, as well as teaching the youth how to safely learn these skills that could potentially save their lives someday!"

The first session starts this Saturday, Nov. 16 from 3 pm to 5 pm at the The Learning Garden-Tom Graham Park, 3808 Up River Rd, Corpus Christi, Texas 78408.

Students are encouraged to dress comfortably in clothes that will likely get dirty and the first class is only $5.

Adults can take the monthly class for $25, $15 dollars for under 18 youth, and ages 5 and under are free. Check their page for group rates.
