Today marks National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, a holiday observed every year on April 30th.

This day was created as a way to raise awareness for thousands of pets that are waiting for (and needing) adoption from the shelters.

If you can care for a pet, consider adopting.

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services has several animals in need of a good home, including some that will be euthanized on May 1st.

Their website features a search tool that can help you find the best pet for your home.

You can also check out their Facebook Page, where they share photos of animals ready to be your "furever" friend.

According to the Corpus Christi Animals Care Service website:

All animals are evaluated for adoptability upon intake. Adult animals that are impounded as strays are held for a minimum of 3 days commencing on the first day after impoundment. Animals with a collar or those appearing to be owned, are held for 5 days to allow the owner time to reclaim the animal. Once the required time is up, and the animal is determined to be a candidate for adoption, it is then placed up for adoption or placed with a rescue. We encourage all 501c3 rescues to become our placement partner.

The current adoption fee is $25. That includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, and a city license tag.

Celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day by sharing pictures of your adopted pet on social media using #AdoptAShelterPetDay.
