CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — Firefighters from several Coastal Bend communities were called out to extinguish 320 bales of cotton that caught fire.

San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera posted on social media the incident is considered a disappointing moment because the cotton is a total loss.

Fire crews from Taft, Gregory, Portland, Rockport, Fulton, Ingleside, Bayside, and Sinton worked to extinguish the fire at a cotton staging location Thursday afternoon. The cotton staging area is north of Gregory near the intersection of County Road 1258 and County Road 2043.

Additional equipment had to create a cut line to allow the bales to burn out.

Several cotton module trucks moved others bales away from the secured location.

The San Patricio Fire Marshall says he doesn’t suspect foul play at this time.
