Approximately three-fourths of the burglaries reported each year in the United States involve residential homes. Many of these crimes occur around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays because, during those times, many people have already purchased gifts they plan to give to their friends and family members. Criminals know they might help themselves to these valuable presents from residents who have not taken measures to make their homes more secure.
While you’re working on making your home less vulnerable to burglars, you might also consider doing something to help people less fortunate than yourself. Replacing the locks on your doors and windows, keeping your home well-lit and getting to know your neighbors better will help protect your home and its contents, but have you ever thought about the people who don’t have homes and holiday gifts to protect? That’s what the owners and employees of Pop-A-Lock of Corpus Christi are doing this year. They’ve established a clothing drive that will gather and distribute a wide range of necessary items for needy families.
During the month of November, you can contribute to Pop-A-Lock’s clothing drive, which will sponsor Annaville Baptist Church Missions and Ministries. You can drop off items such as jackets, pants, socks, shoes, blankets, winter hats and gloves, sweaters and hoodies, shirts, underwear, backpacks and sanitary items at the Pop-A-Lock office at 5724 Leopard St. in Corpus Christi from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This is the first year for the Pop-A-Lock clothing drive, according to Danielle Mitchell, who works in accounts receivable with Pop-A-Lock of Corpus Christi.
“We would like for people to get out there and help,” she said. “If you can’t do a whole lot, donate what you can. It will make a difference for our neighbors in need.”
She pointed out that the impetus behind the Pop-A-Lock clothing drive was to give back to the community, adding that the drive will likely be an annual event.
“We’re basically doing a community service. We’re just trying to help the community,” she said.
Pop-A-Lock will publicize the clothing drive on their Facebook page during the month of November.
Mitchell pointed out that there are other things you can do to help those in need during the holiday season and throughout the year whether it’s donating money or your time to help a local charitable organization or buying a meal for a homeless person.
“Every little bit helps,” she said.
Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a joyous time of the year, but it also can be a difficult time for your neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. You can provide that help by taking part in the Pop-A-Lock clothing drive or by doing your part to support other organizations that help people help themselves. And, to learn more about how to protect your home, apartment or condo from burglars and other intruders, call Pop-A-Lock any time of the day or night at (361) 851-6736 or visit www.PopALockCorpusChristi.com.
