For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (Colossians 1:9).

In Paul’s epistle (letter) to the Colossians, he begins his discourse by thanking the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for their faith in Christ Jesus and their love for all the saints. He was in continual prayer for them because of their faith in Christ Jesus, their love for all the saints, and because of the hope which is laid up for them in heaven. Christ is seen and expressed in scripture as our “Blessed Hope.” This hope is kept in heaven reserved not only for them but you and me. We should always follow this example of earnest prayer for new believers that they might reach the goal set before them.

The theme that Paul mentions here also resonates throughout his other epistles. He always puts faith, hope, and love in proper context and perspective. His desire is to always present Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of all, as the ruler of heaven and earth, and as our soon coming King.

The apostle’s prayer is purposeful with the view of reaching a predetermined goal. Therefore, he says, “for this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy” (Colossians 1:9-11).

This is a pattern prayer designed to help one reach his goal. The goal of our faith is the salvation of our souls. I believe and trust the Lord that you also will reach God’s goal for you.
