May Is National Foster Care Month

</p><p>May is a very significant month for Benchmark Family Services.  It is National Foster Care Month.  It is a month to acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors, child welfare professionals and other members of the community who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.  We each can play a part in enhancing the lives of children and youth in foster care.

Last month, Benchmark Family Services reported an approximate 7,000 foster children in need of a home and only 2,865 were placed.  The Coastal Bend responded and many called the facility to take action but sadly there are more children than foster homes.

It’s not about the story behind the children or their situation, it’s about understanding that these children do not have their own room, a loving parent to take them to the park, the freedom to roam around a place they call home, or anything the average person takes for granted.  They live with judgment and insecurities and they need someone to help them know they are loved, they are worth everything, and above all that someone cares about them.

Being a foster parent is not easy just as parenting is not easy.  It takes commitment and patience but it is the most rewarding act someone can do for a child.  Yes, there are classes and applications to fill out but once that part is completed, you can be a foster parent to many loving children.  Call Benchmark Family Services today and begin a joyous, fulfilling journey with a child in need.
