At least three people were killed and seven others injured in Mexico city after gunmen dressed as mariachi players opened fire at a busy tourist plaza.

Mexico City police said in a statement the victims were killed at an intersection on the edge of the busy Plaza Garibaldi, a major tourist destination packed with mariachi bars.

Police say the gunmen escaped on motorcycles. Police cordoned off the attack site as forensic investigators searched the scene.

Dozens of people continued to drink and listen to live music nearby.

Plaza Garibaldi borders one of Mexico city’s most notorious neighborhoods known for gang activity.

The capital city has seen a surge of homicides since 2014.

Police say much of the crime stems from drug dealing by violent gangs.
