Teacher transforms classroom into ‘themes’ to help students

A Kolda Elementary teacher is using visual aids to transform her classroom and teach her students.

Amalia Barragan teaches fourth grade and for the past 14 years, she’s decked out her classroom. Today’s theme is the board game Candy Land.

Barragan says it takes her about a month to come up with a lesson plan to match the theme, she uses her own money and hours of her free time to decorate.

Barragan says all that doesn’t matter, as long as her students learn.

Candy Land isn’t the only theme in Mrs. Barragan’s room. She’s done a pizzeria theme to teach “improper and mixed numbers”, a surgery theme getting to the “heart” of the problem and Mission Impossible, solving puzzles.
