CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi's largest teachers' union is angry about recent statements made by Dr. Cynthia Hernandez.

The local chapter of the American Federation of Teachers had some harsh words about Hernandez, CCISD's coordinator for reading instruction and library media services.

At a recent board meeting, Hernandez attributed low reading performance to teacher and administrator ineffectiveness.

Hernandez, the wife of CCISD superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez, became emotional at the meeting as she made her report to the trustees.

That reaction sparked the ire of the teachers' union, who said they were "appalled" by Cynthia Hernandez's remarks.
