Glamour boy Beckham to miss World Cup after injury

LONDON (AP) Unless David Beckham can mend it as well as he can bend it, soccer's now-limping glamour boy will miss this summer's World Cup a blow to tournament organizers, sponsors, TV viewers and average fans.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) Britain's Prince Charles arrived in Poland on Monday with his wife, Camilla, to start a nine-day tour that will take them through central Europe.

Somali government signs deal with Sufi militia

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) Somalia's government has signed an agreement with a powerful militia that offers high-level militants senior government positions in return for their military support during a long-planned offensive against an Islamist insurgency.

The agreement gives the Ahlu-sunah Wal-jamea militia five ministry posts as well as diplomatic posts and senior positions in the police and intelligence services.

'Quiet corruption' hurting Africa's poor: report

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) A World Bank report says teachers and other public servants who don't show up for work are fueling "quiet corruption" throughout Africa that is disproportionately hurting the continent's poor.

The report says studies over the last decade found teachers across Africa fail to appear as often as 25 percent of the time. The report warns of the effect such absenteeism has on children.

Vietnam releases leading dissident from prison

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) Vietnam released one of its leading democracy activists from prison Monday after the dissident Catholic priest spent three years and suffered two strokes in solitary confinement, his lawyer and sister said.

Authorities released Father Nguyen Van Ly from a prison near Hanoi at 4 a.m. and drove him in an ambulance back to his hometown of Hue, his sister, Nguyen Thi Hieu, told The Associated Press.
