AUSTIN - The Texas Department of Corrections announced today a man who escaped the Garza East Unit in Beeville 16 years ago is now in custody in Mexico.

Juan Salaz, an American citizen, climbed three 16-foot tall razor wire topped security fences during his escape on March 22, 1997.
