Abandoned business taken over by transients

Posted: Updated:

The La Playa Grill and Bar on Flour Bluff Road and South Padre Island Drive has been closed around two years.

Neighbors say the building has become a haven for the homeless.

When KRIS 6 News visited the property Monday, trash could be seen strewed everywhere on one of the building's patios.

While nobody was around while KRIS 6 News was there, it's obvious people have recently been on the patio.  Also, the back door, which wasn't boarded, was wide open and more trash can be seen inside.

The old La Playa is right next to Funtrackers, a popular spot with batting cages, go-karts, and an arcade.

The general manager, Kevin Bell, couldn't go on camera without corporate approval but said people have been on the patio as long as he remembers. He added the situation is bad for his business, especially after dark.

A CCPD spokesperson said officers will go out to the restaurant to "deal" with the situation.

KRIS 6 News hadn’t heard if that has happened yet.
