CORPUS CHRISTI -

We have an update on a story we did last fall about the Gold Fish, a recent addition to the nightlife scene in downtown Corpus Christi.  It's now getting some national attention online.

The Gold Fish is currently reviewed in a feature story. that appears in the travel section of CNN.com.  It's about chic restaurants and other hospitality businesses around the nation that have been set up in old gas stations.. As we reported last fall, the Gold Fish building here was originally built as a gas station way back in the 1930's.

But owner Robert Cooper, who's a Corpus Christi native, told us  when he started look for a place to start a business downtown he wasn't looking for a gas station, he was looking for something with character and this fit the bill, " You know we  have forsaken our downtown areas for terrible strip malls and I don't agree with that, we have these beautiful buildings down here, lets not tear them down... let's put the effort in and renovate them, even if it costs a bit more. "

And that's a common attitude among a growing number of young entrepreneurs both here and nationwide. They have a real appreciation of the older architecture in downtown areas, places with some history . Cooper agrees with the CNN article about the national trend to reuse older buildings. He says, "I don't know how trends start but there's definitely one going on, this return to downtown areas and main streets everywhere.  And judging from the steady business at the Gold Fish, it's a trend that's resonating with customers.

The Gold Fish is located at 724 North Mesquite Street. It's open most weeknights from 4-pm to 2-am. And it is gaining a reputation for the crafted cocktails and the view.
