The Eighth Wonder of the World is safe from demolition, for now. Leaders in Houston approved a $105 million project to turn the Astrodome into an event center.
The plan will create 14-hundred new parking spots under the dome. Officials hope that will make the facility attractive for events like conventions.
"It's important that the dome start raising revenue that can help pay for upgrades to the stadium and all of NRG Park," Judge Ed Emmett of Harris County said.
County leaders say the money to pay for the project will come from the city's general fund and other sources that will not require property tax increases.
They also considered demolishing the dome, which would have cost $35 million. Operating the Dome as-is would cost around $170,000 a year.
