The group No Child Goes Hungry Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend Food Bank have teamed up on a program that will provide meals for school kids over the weekend.
Daniel Esparza, founder of No Child Goes Hungry Corpus Christi, says starting next Friday, pre-selected children will receive a backpack with four to six small meals that will provide them something to eat over the weekend.
The following Monday, kids will return the backpacks to their schools, and then they'll get them again the following Friday.
The Coastal Bend Food Bank will be in charge of filling the backpacks with meals.
Children participating in the program have been selected by their school principals and counselors. Parents should contact their child's school if they want to be eligible.
For now, the program will include Corpus Christi and Taft schools but Esparza hopes to expand it, and currently is seeking sponsors.
Esparza says he can be contacted on his Facebook page or at 361-933-7983.
