A new report show's the county's online jury selection system not only makes jury selection simpler, it also saves the county hundreds of thousands of dollars.
CORPUS CHRISTI -
If you have been summoned to jury duty recently, you probably noticed there is a new online jury selection system in place. A new report shows that online system is streamlining the jury selection process, and saving the county money.
They system launched a little over a year ago. It enables potential jurors to fill out their information in an online form. Then if they are selected for duty, they will be notified by text message or email.
That cuts down on the number of people waiting around the courthouse to see if they will be selected for jury duty.
In the year since it launched, the county has had to do less mailing, and pay fewer people waiting in the courthouse. All of that has saved the county $350,000.
"What we contend is that $350,000 is just a small piece of the pie, when you look at the savings to employers here in Nueces County," Nueces County Commissioner Mike Pusley said. "They no longer have to send their employees over here to sit for half a day, or three fourths of the day. Lost time and wages to them, and lost time and productivity and output for all those companies. So we think that $350,000 is just a drop in the bucket compared to what it has saved this community in lost time, effort for people having to come here and not ever having to serve on a jury."
Nueces County is one of just a dozen counties in Texas, to have the online jury system.
The county is also looking at enhancing they system's technology in the future.
