Free tax help offered through April 17th

Posted: Updated:
COASTAL BEND -

Need some help with your taxes this year? Would you like to help other people prepare their taxes? If so, then the United Way of the Coastal Bend would like to hear from you!

UWCB is looking for those who are willing to be trained and then volunteer to help others complete their taxes for the 2018 season. It is all done through VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Volunteers will participate in two free training sessions, receiving in-depth training on the tax code from IRS certified trainers. Once the certification test is passed, those volunteers will then be ready to assist low-to-moderate income taxpayers (those who earned up to $66,000 in 2017), free of charge.

Each of the free training classes must be attended, and will be held at the O'Connor Business Building at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Saturday, February 17th and Saturday, February 24th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Those who have questions or would like to sign-up should either call (361) 882-2529 or email Jamey.Byrne@uwcb.org.

Ned help getting your taxes done? Then keep in mind that you will need to bring the following:

  • Government-issued photo ID;
  • Valid Social Security cards or ITIN for taxpayer, spouse and all dependents;
  • If married and filing jointly, both spouses must be present;
  • All wage and income statements for 2017 (e.g., W-2, W-2G, 1099-R forms);
  • Forms 1095-A, B or C Affordable Care Act statement;
  • Name address and federal ID number, a copy of last year’s return if available;
  • Account and banking routing numbers if requesting direct deposit.

Please note that the IRS has determined that returns claiming disaster losses are outside of VITA’s scope.
