Local disabled U.S. Air Force combat veteran receives new roof

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI -

Veterans sacrifice many things to serve our country. Three organizations are making sure a local veteran is getting a much needed helping hand after she was scammed out of thousands of dollars.

All Tonya Van Maren wanted was a new roof after Hurricane Harvey damaged hers. Instead she was caught off guard by a storm chaser.

Storm chasers are the contractors that go door-to-door soliciting business to repair damage or leaks, looking to make a quick buck.

“I trusted him. I went to my bank which is right up the road. I withdrew $3,500 in cash, and he was supposed to come the next day. He said the money was for materials, and he never came back,” said Van Maren.

The owners of Mitchell Roofing, Owens Corning, and Purple Heart Homes stepped up and donated a new roof for disabled U.S. Air Force combat veteran Tonya Van Maren.

“They are not doing it for the publicity. They are doing it because they care about America's veterans, and I think everything else is a wonderful side effect,” said Van Maren.

Van Maren said the generosity of these companies helped restore her faith in people despite getting scammed.

“It makes it harder and harder to trust anyone to do the work. So this is, it’s beyond, it’s a miracle,” said Van Maren.

Owens Corning Platinum Contractors are working with Purple Heart Homes to provide new roofs to veterans in need. Tonya Van Maren, a disabled U.S. Air Force combat veteran in Corpus Christi, will receive a new roof on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, from Mitchell Roofing, Inc., an Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractor, as part of the Owens Corning National Roof Deployment Project.

This nationwide effort is a way to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them. Through a partnership with Purple Heart Homes, Tonya was selected and approved to receive a new roof.

“Veterans may have served in the past, but their service to our country lasts a lifetime,” said Jason Lewinski, Contractor Network Leader, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt. “Many veterans and their families face added challenges having lived a life of service, and the Owens Corning Network of Platinum Contractors is stepping up to help.”

Owens Corning Roofing and its network of independent Platinum Contractors, along with support from the Owens Corning Foundation, donate roofing materials and labor to replace roofing shingles on the homes of military veterans and their families nationwide.

Tonya joined the U.S. Air Force in 1984 and retired in 2005.

With 21 years of active duty service, Tonya was deployed multiple times during her career to combat zones worldwide. She received many medals and commendations for valor during her service to our country.

“As essential combat personnel, Tonya and her daughter made many personal sacrifices to protect our freedom,” said Daniel Mitchell, CEO of Mitchell Roofing, Inc. “Hurricane Harvey caused thousands of dollars in damage to her home. This is our way of showing our appreciation for her service, and our concern for our neighbors in the communities we serve ---we’re honored to help her replace her roof.”

“Purple Heart Homes is proud to work with Owens Corning and Mitchell Roofing, Inc. to provide Tonya with the gift of a warm, dry roof in the wake of Hurricane Harvey,” said Dale Beatty, Co-Founder of Purple Heart Homes. “We commend the wonderful assistance that has been provided by the Roof Deployment Project, through the material support of Owens Corning and the volunteerism of the Platinum Contractor network. It is a wonderful thing when the American business community steps up to fill the gaps in caring for our nations’ heroes.”
