Miller basketball team in jeopardy of missing playoffs

Posted: Updated:

Recently, a familiar face has temporarily taken the place of the head coaching position at Miller High School.

That familiar face - Bucs Head Coach Justen Evans.

Evans filled in for two games during the month of January while Head Coach Maurice Bastian was suspended. Bastian was suspended for two games due to scheduling extra games for the 2017-18 season. According to UIL standards, basketball teams are supposed to have 21 regular season games and up to three tournaments, the schedule included two extra games that resulted to Bastian's suspension.

Although the suspension was short term, the consequences could cause more concern in the future. The team also has to forfeit two games of their season, so Miller will be forfeiting their last two games of the regular season.

Those two games will be Tuloso-Midway and the Crossover Playoff game, and the loser from the Crossover Playoff game will be eliminated from playoffs. The best way for Miller to make the postseason, is if they win the rest of their games, and Ray who sits at the top of the North Division, loses to Miller and one other conference game.

This could pose some uncertainty come playoff time but with 6 games left in the schedule, anything can happen before the postseason begins.

Bastian will be back coaching the Bucs Friday night, January 26, as they take on the Alice Coyotes.
