CORPUS CHRISTI -

Corpus Christi police were called to the Bel Aire Shopping Center after 911 dispatchers received reports of gunshots heard near a Dollar General store.

The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the 2700 block of South Staples and Annapolis Drive.

When police arrived, store employees told investigators said a new employee at the retail store confronted a couple suspected of stealing merchandise.

Officers were able to find the employee who said he fired two shots but was unaware if he hit anything.

Police wrote a citation for the employee for discharging a weapon within the city limits.

However, charges could be upgraded after police said a victim walked into the Christus Spohn Shoreline hospital with a gunshot wound three hours after the shooting. Their condition was not known at time of writing.
