Sparks flew as high school students from around the Coastal Bend put their welding skills to the test.
Over at Nueces County Junior Livestock Show, the annual welding competition pits students against each other but the contest is anything but amateur.
About 160 student welders took part in the challenge, gaining valuable hands-on experience they can take with them further in life. As the American Welding Society's chairman explained, the welders are judged on a professional level.
"It's a high standard test...they are tested just as if they were in the plants here in Corpus," explained Ellery Francisco, chairman with American Welding Society.
Students said the competition not only gives them excellent welding practice, it can also be a jumpstart to their careers.
