Alice 'Door Check' initiative aims to curb auto burglaries

Posted: Updated:

Police in Alice are encouraging the public to be more mindful of vehicle break-ins with a new "Door Check" initiative.

Car burglaries are on the rise in Alice, according to officials and police are urging citizens to lock their vehicles because criminals are targeting those who don't.

Minimizing the risk of a vehicle break-in was the goal of the new 9PM Door Check initiative started by Alice Police Department.

As part of the program, every night at 8:59 p.m., the department will post a reminder to its social media accounts reminding residents to make sure their vehicles are locked and that no valuables have been left behind.

"The purpose of the program is to take that first step, that first initiative in protecting your property. And a kind of self-check," explained Patrol Officer Raul Valadez with Alice Police Department.

Police are also asking folks to start using the popular "Next Door" app on their smartphones to keep an eye on what's going on in their neighborhoods.
