YWCA offers new fitness classes for men, women

Posted: Updated:

As the new year begins, gyms across the Coastal Bend are likely to be packed with "January People." Those are the folks who are, laudibly, following up on the fitness goals they have made for 2018. And while they may sometimes annoy those who have been at the gym faithfully putting in the work long before the new year, the YWCA is certainly glad to see them!

A quick glance at the schedule will reveal many land and water classes offered for everyone -- every week -- at all times of the day, including:

  • Sculpt & Tone: A circuit of weight-bearing, strength-focused exercises that can be performed using a combination of body-weight exercises, free-weight exercises, rhythm and coordination.
  • Line Dancing: Dance movements that help with coordination, toning and balance.
  • Basic Blast/Yoga/Tai Chi: The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination.

Those who enjoy getting into the water for their exercise may want to consider:

  • Sweat Deep: High Intensity Interval Training, including Tabata. Deep water prevents joint impact, yet offers a high-fat-burning workout.
  • Water Tai Chi/Water Yoga: A low impact way to lose tension while building strength and balance.

According to those who lead the local YWCA, the goal is not to focus so much on looking good while you exercise as it is on being comfortable doing the workout and becoming healthier. The facility (4601 Corona Drive) includes an indoor, 25-meter heated pool, a therapeutic pool, dry sauna, cardio and weight rooms, as well as a full-court gym, patio and meeting rooms.

The YWCA is open Monday through Thursday from 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM and on Friday from 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM. They reopen Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. They accept Silver Sneakers, Prime and Silver & Fit members.

Free One-Day guest passes are available.
