Elena Jasmine Ramirez is Corpus Christi's official and first newborn baby of 2018. She arrived at Bay Area Hospital New Year's morning at 3:41 a.m.
Elena Jasmine came into the world weighing 6 pounds, 13 ounces, and was nearly 20 inches long. Her first delivery date was set for Christmas, but that wasn't in the stars.
For first time parents, 20 year old Marissa Cruz, an H-E-B employee, and 24 year old Rolando Ramirez, a Subaru car dealer, their first child is once again re-arranging schedules. The couple had originally planned to have a low key New Year's Eve, beginning with dinner at a local Chili's restaurant, but Marissa's water slightly burst.
She thought, it was just an accident, but a couple of hours later, it was go time.
With her birth, Elena Jasmine not only beat out other babies for the "NYE Baby" title, she also won her dad a side bet he had going with his buddy, who is also expecting a baby very soon.
Elena's middle name, Jasmine, honors a close friend of her father's who passed away when he was younger.
For now, the baby girl is too little to comprehend the significance of her name or the timing of her arrival; but, she leads the charge for over 4 thousand babies that are expected to be born in 2018 at Bay Area Hospital.
Across town, the first New Year baby boy was born at Spohn South a few hours later. Tevin Benjamin Hailey, weighed 8 pounds, 4oz, and is 2 inches long.
