A Corpus Christi Police Officer is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of an accident on Saturday.

According to CCPD, Officer Thomas Zirkle, 35, a 3-year-veteran of the department, was directing traffic for a crash in the area of Old Brownsville Road and S.P.I.D. when he was hit by a vehicle.

Police say witnesses at the scene identified the vehicle that hit Zirkle, and when officers contacted the suspect driver they could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from him.

24-year-old Orelvis Lopez was arrested and charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle, and transported to the City Detention Center.
