Students at Joseph Dawson Elementary celebrated a major milestone for their campus on Friday.
The rhythmic sounds of Carroll High School's drumline kicked off the celebration as Dawson Elementary marked its 20 year anniversary. Dawson's student council later read the story of Joseph Dawson, for whom the school is named.
They told Dawson's story, honoring the veteran for his contributions during World War II, including receipt of the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions on D-Day.
Dawson's daughter also spoke at the event, describing his love for his country and Corpus Christi.
Students also presented special pins to the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi and other veterans attending the day's event.
