Austin officials decide to reveal city manager finalists

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Austin City Council has decided to release the names of up to five finalists for city manager after a local newspaper sued the city for not releasing the records.

Stephen Newton is a representative of search firm Russell Reynolds. He recommended to the council Thursday that they release the finalists' names. Newton had previously advised in March that the council keep the names confidential until the final decision was made.

The Austin American-Statesman filed a lawsuit Oct. 31 after the city denied a public records request.

The city told the state attorney general that revealing the names would undermine the search for the best candidate.

The city manager position has been vacant for over a year since Marc Ott left the position. Elaine Hart has filled in the role temporarily.
