Corpus Christi in running for ESPN Boxing, Super Bowl special
Corpus Christi has been named as a finalist to host an ESPN Boxing, Super Bowl Special.
According to Hall of Fame Boxing promoter, Bob Arum, Las Vegas, San Antonio and Los Angeles are also in the running to host the event which would feature two world title bouts, and be televised on ESPN live as part of pre-Super Bowl programming on February 3.
"We've looked at multiple sites for this event, but like the idea of it possibly being in Corpus Christi," said Arum. "We like Corpus Christi and know there are a lot of terrific fight fans. The American Bank Center is perfect for boxing at this high level. So what we have is the marriage of a quality event at a quality venue in a great fight town. Corpus Christi checks off all requirements for this event.”
Arum was not willing to confirm the participating fighters, but did say it would be a "major boxing card featuring two world title fights." Arum and ESPN expect to make the official announcement on the card and the site next week.
