Coastal Bend storm recovery could take years

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Joe McComb says Coastal Bend storm victims will need to be patient.

During the Padre Island Business Association's monthly luncheon, the Corpus Christi mayor the area's storm recovery has made progress but we're looking at a long haul.

Mayor McComb said the recovery from Hurricane Harvey is now what he called a fast food, fast track process so storm victims will have to be patient.

He added, "On the optimistic side, 18 months to get fully back up and running. On, you know, on the realistic side it could take 2 to 3 years."

One reason for the long recovery is the extent of repairs that need to be made.

Mayor McComb says there is a shortage of contractors and builders.

He says they're working on rebuilding project from the Coastal Bend all the way up to Houston.

The mayor also pointed out that in some communities, 50% of businesses that were damaged will never reopen.
