Unless he gets a last minute stay, a man sentenced to death for killing a Beeville corrections officer is hours away from his scheduled execution.
Death row inmate Robert Pruett was sentenced to death for fatally stabbing a corrections officer at the state prison in Beeville back in 1999. Pruett had already been serving another sentence for murder before the stabbing death of the corrections officer occurred.
Thursday morning, the State Board of Pardons and Paroles rejected a petition for clemency. On Tuesday, Pruett filed a motion asking the US Supreme Court to halt his execution because he claims a lower court took too long to rule on one of his appeals.
The Supreme Court recently refused to consider another appeal from Pruett asking for additional DNA testing.
