A suspected drunk driver who had been on the run for nearly 15 years appeared before a judge Thursday morning.
George Rodriguez is accused of killing Flour Bluff teens Charles Avalos and Steven Jackson in a car crash in March 2000. According to officers at the scene, Rodriguez, who was 25 and a sergeant at the McConnell Unit prison in Beeville at the time, collided with the pickup the teens were in along Interstate-37. Rodriguez was charged with intoxication manslaughter but skipped his court appearance in 2002. He had been on the run ever since until he was captured in Piedras Negras, Mexico this week.
During Thursday morning's hearing, Rodriguez told the judge his brother hired an attorney for him but he didn't know who he was. So, the judge ordered Rodriguez to return to court Tuesday morning.
The families of Charles Avalos and Steven Jackson also attended the hearing.
