New state law regarding head lice

Posted: Updated:

As of September 1, a new Texas state law requires school nurses to notify parents if a child has head lice. If a child has a lice their parent must be notified within 48 hours, and the rest of the class must be notified within 5 days.

The child who has lice, will remain anonymous and the notice will be either in paper form or electronic.

The CDC says that head lice is not an infectious disease and is only commonly transferred through head-to-head contact. Many officials say that children should not be sent home from school just because of lice.
