CORPUS CHRISTI - As we have reported, the Niña replica ship that sits in the Corpus Christi Marina was damaged during Hurricane Harvey. The Niña is the last of three replica ships, built to commemorate the quest of Christopher Columbus, that were gifted to Corpus Christi by Spain in 1992.

The Nina began to take on water in the days after the hurricane, and now sits halfway underwater in the Marina.

After sending divers beneath the surface of the bay to check on the damaged ship, the local Columbus Sailing Association (CSA) reports that there is not any damage to the ship that cannot be repaired, and repair it is what they plan to do.

Kim Mrazek, President of the CSA, says she is optimistic that the Niña can once again be raised, floated and repaired "to grace our bayfront once again with her awe inspiring presence."

The CSA is asking for the community to donate to the cause.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for donations. All donations are tax deductible, as the CSA is a registered 501 (c)3 charitable organization.

The other two replica ships, the Pinta and the Santa María, were demolished in 2014.

"There is a deadline fast approaching where the money must be in place, or she will be demolished to rest with her sisters in the landfill," Mrazek said.
