Improvements are in the works to make the city's Sports, Entertainment and Arts district safer for pedestrians.

The city plans to add new sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act to Chaparral Street from Brewster Street to Harbor Drive and Brewster Street from North Broadway Street to Chaparral Street. That's near the American Bank Center and Heritage Park.

The city will also add more lighting and landscaping to that area. The city will begin accepting bids for the project in October 2017. The work is scheduled to get underway next February and wrap up by July.

The funding comes from the 2012 bond package.
